Shark Populatiion:
In modern day overfishing of sharks is a worrying issue. This is an issue because the growth in a shark's population is long and slow due to their k selected lifestyle. Sharks have a few offspring that grow old and reach sexual maturity at an older age. Since they reach their sexual maturity at an older age, this cause their population growth rate be slow. Therefore, since they have a low birth rate, if they have a large death rate the effect on the shark's population will be great. overfishing will deplete the population and leave the population in a critical status because for the population to reach stability again, it will take a long period of time. A solution to this is to have a conservation effort for the sharks to prevent the issue of overfishing. To give you a better insight of the amounts of this mortality and birth rate in numbers, there have been estimations made for these rates. The birth rate had been estimated to be 0.91-0.94 a year and another estimation was 0.89-0.93. both estimations of the birth rate being pretty close. The mortality rate has been estimated to be 0.19-0.23. The population of sharks can be less endangered if they were living and dying natural and without any outside variables such as overfishing.
